CAHN’s Smear Job on Andrew Lawton: A Masterclass in Character Assassination and Desperation
By Tom Marazzo
When the so-called Canadian Anti-Hate Network (CAHN) publishes an article, you already know two things: it’s going to be dripping in ideological venom, and it will be riddled with exaggerated nonsense designed to demoralize conservatives and silence dissent. Their latest hit piece against journalist Andrew Lawton is no exception—it reads like the deranged diary of an activist who has lost the ability to distinguish between disagreement and hate.
Let’s not mince words: this is not journalism. This is a political weapon wielded by a far-left organization masquerading as a human rights watchdog, but in reality functioning as a taxpayer-funded smear machine. They claim to promote inclusion and democracy while engaging in the character assassination of anyone who dares step outside the suffocating bounds of progressive orthodoxy.
And here's the kicker: CAHN isn’t just ideologically dangerous—they’re financially entangled with the very political apparatus they pretend to monitor. Their founding chair, Bernie Farber, has made a career out of pretending to be a neutral defender of human rights while spending years hobnobbing with Liberal Party elites. Under his leadership, CAHN has raked in over $900,000 in taxpayer funding from Liberal-controlled departments like Public Safety Canada, Canadian Heritage, and the Multiculturalism & Anti-Racism Initiatives program. Is it any wonder they never criticize the Liberal government? They’re not watchdogs—they’re lapdogs, snatching taxpayer dollars to attack anyone the ruling party considers inconvenient.
And just when you thought it couldn’t get more repulsive, enter Richard Warman—a key figure in CAHN’s orbit. Warman has spent much of his legal career filing lawsuit after lawsuit against his critics in an attempt to silence them. Many of these cases have been widely condemned as SLAPPs—Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation. His aggressive tactics were so over the top, they helped bring about Ontario’s Anti-SLAPP legislation. And now, in the grandest of ironies, he benefits from laws meant to stop the very kind of legal thuggery he pioneered.
This is CAHN’s twisted ecosystem: a partisan propaganda outlet that uses taxpayer funding to label dissent as “hate,” teams up with ideological hitmen to crush critics in court, and plays shock trooper for a political class that fears free speech more than anything else. Their entire strategy is ripped from the authoritarian playbook: smear, isolate, and destroy.
Now, their crosshairs are on Andrew Lawton. Why? Because he refuses to bow. Because he dares to think for himself. Because he refuses to parrot their jargon-laced ideology and instead offers common-sense journalism that millions of Canadians actually respect.
CAHN trots out their tired checklist of weaponized buzzwords—“Islamophobia,” “homophobia,” “racism,” “misogyny”—without even bothering to prove anything. Why should they? In their warped worldview, challenging radical gender ideology, criticizing reckless immigration policy, or refusing to virtue signal on command is enough to label you a public enemy.
They even stoop to mocking Lawton’s mental health history from over a decade ago—a low blow that exposes CAHN’s true nature. They’ll exploit anything, even someone’s past struggles, to destroy a person’s career. That’s not just unethical—it’s grotesque.
And the irony? If Andrew Lawton had praised Justin Trudeau and championed radical progressivism, CAHN would’ve thrown him a parade. But because he thinks for himself and speaks to the concerns of everyday Canadians, he’s labeled a danger to democracy. CAHN doesn’t defend democracy—they police it. They want total ideological compliance, and anyone who resists must be ruined.
Their latest shriek-fest even includes a laughable attempt to guilt Lawton by association with the Freedom Convoy—an event that inspired millions of Canadians and exposed the cracks in our political system. In CAHN’s eyes, merely knowing someone in a group chat is enough to be branded a domestic extremist. It’s pathetic. It’s authoritarian. And it’s dangerous.
And let’s not forget their classic activist trick: organize a tiny protest—maybe 200 people, many bused in or professional agitators—amplify it through their media allies, and claim it represents “the community.” They did it to the truckers. They’re doing it again. But Canadians are no longer falling for this astroturf theater.
Let’s call CAHN what it truly is: a propaganda outfit for the Liberal elite. A group that uses fear, moral panic, and government grants to shut down public debate. They are not protecting Canadians from hate—they are protecting their political masters from accountability.
Andrew Lawton is simply their latest target. But tomorrow, it could be you.
And here’s the silver lining—every time CAHN overplays its hand with these transparently desperate hit pieces, more Canadians wake up to how corrupt and broken our media and political ecosystem really is. Every smear campaign they launch only strengthens the resolve of the very people they seek to destroy.
CAHN’s shrieking won’t stop the truth. If they hate Andrew Lawton this much, it’s only because he’s doing something right.
Thank you for exposing this disgusting person with his sociopathic mental issues. He is an example of the dangerous people among us; many with the extreme left-wing ideology currently being shown by some followers of the Liberal Party. There is no end to what people with this mindset will do or say to achieve their goal. They use extreme, often illegal, tactics to attack others who do not agree with their opinions, and are very often purveyors of censorship.
There is just no end to the likes of CAHN it would seem -- a festering hate-mongering group who attacks anyone who does share its twisted extremist ideology that,, as you note, has been generously funded by the Liberal government and its agencies for years. They falsely attacked the Freedom Convoy labelling them as racists and extremists, and even tried Nazis -- it was all a lie. They have been manufacturing this crap for years. More recently they painted the parents who marched in the Millions March for Children -- protesting schools indoctrinating their kids in gender ideology as hateful extremists. They smeared James Topp -- the CAF vet who marched across Canada to protest vaccine mandates. They smeared teenager Josh Alexander who became anti gender ideology proponent after he was suspended from a Catholic School, no less, for expressing views that there were only two sexes, and Billboard Chris, who also protests gender ideology as it pertains to the insanity of 'gender affirming care' for children is also on their hit list.
I watched a lot of Andrew Laughton when he was with True North Media and The Andrew Laughton Show in particular. Unlike most journalists working in MSM, Andrew made no bones about his Conservative leanings. Yet, despite that, I always found his shows informative, measured and often tinged with some humour, often about himself and often self-deprecating. He has been very open about his mental health struggles with depression, which was a very personal, but he felt it was necessary go public with them given his concerns about the Liberal government's rather cavalier intentions to extend Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to people suffering with mental illness. Somehow the Liberals position on this was that they was would actually never offer MAiD to someone with a mental illness that was suicidal, because they had measures in place to ensure a mentally ill person seeking to have the government kill them because they couldn't do it themselves wasn't actually suicidal, rap your head around that. But for CAHN discuss this very personal and obviously very painful aspect of Andrew's life and use it as a weapon is beyond disgusting, yet, not surprising. Because these people have no limit in the depth, when it comes to how low they will stoop to sick their hate on someone. It is so ironic that they have the audacity to call themselves the Canadian Anti-Hate Network.
